Post-Concussion Protocol
If a student-athlete exhibits signs and symptoms consistent with a concussion (even if not formally diagnosed), the student-athlete must be removed from play immediately and is not allowed to return to play (game, practice, or conditioning) the student-athletes must be evaluated by a qualified medical professional with up to date training in concussion management.
Student-athletes are encouraged to report their own symptoms, or to report if peers have concussion symptoms. Coaches, parents, volunteers, first responders, school nurse, licensed athletic trainers (if available), are responsible for removing a student-athlete from play immediately if they suspect a concussion or exhibits signs and symptoms consistent with a concussion.
Following the injury, the student-athlete must be evaluated by a qualified medical professional with training in concussion management and can ONLY be medically cleared by appropriate medical personnel (MD ONLY); it is strongly recommended that the MD be up to date in concussion management and in compliances with the NC Concussion State Law.
It is strongly recommended that each institution (School) seek qualified medical professionals in the surrounding community to serve as resources in the area of concussion management.
In order for a student- athlete to return to play without restriction, he/she must have written clearance from appropriate medical personnel (MD ONLY); with MD oversight/approval and having completed the gradual RTP progression. The NC State concussion form that must be used for this written clearance is posted on this website: (http://gfellerwallerlaw.unc.edu/GfellerWallerLaw/gwlaw.html).
