Welcome
A little about Who/what the certified athletic trainer is at swain high school?
Dear Swain Parents and Athletes:
For those of you who are not familiar with a certified athletic trainer (ATC), I'd like to introduce myself and explain some of the services I offer as the certified athletic trainer at Swain County High School.
My name is Carrie Powell; I am a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Since 2003, I have had the honor to work with Swain County High School, which is provided through an orthopedic/Sports Medicine group, located in Sylva NC at Harris Regional Hospital (http://carolinawestsportsmedicine.com). Our sports medicine group is an “outreach” clinic, meaning – I work for the clinic then I am also outreached to Swain County HS as an athletic trainer. We have several ATC that are outreached to other surrounding HS; Swain County HS is where I am outreached to.
(See the following link for more information about what an outreach athletic trainer is: http://www.nata.org/career-center/employers/sample-job-descriptions/general-clinical-outreach-athletic-trainer) because of the federal law fair labor standards act on December 1, 2016 the hospital started enforcing 40 hours per week so there maybe times I have to change the times I can be at school in order to cover as much as I can for pratices and home games. Most away games will be covered by the "home" certified atheltic trainer (ATC) or arragments if possible will be made to have it covered, again if possible.
My major responsibilities at the HS are prevention, acute care, evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. I will evaluate your child's injury to determine severity, apply first aid, and then determine what the best course of treatment is. I am in constant open communication with the athlete, parents, coach(es), doctors, PTs, etc…regarding your child’s injury and the best course of action/treatment. Beyond first aid, I can reassess the injury daily and provide treatments, exercises, taping and padding, etc.
When physician or at times formal physical therapy visits are necessary, I will help make arrangements (if preferred) to help schedule timely appointments. I will then follow up with these personnel and the coach to assure a safe return to sports for your child.
Also, if your child should suffer a concussion, along with our “concussion specialist physician” and team physician, preforming several concussion tests, myself along with the physician will help manage the recovery from initial evaluation, to daily symptom monitoring, obtaining necessary MD clearances, supervising Impact post tests and monitoring your child through the NC State mandated 6-step “Return to Play Protocol”. I will work closely with parents, coaches, physicians and guidance counselors, through our Board of Education Policy, to assist in providing for proper rest - mental and physical for your child while he/she recovers. (See "Concussion Management" on my page for more information regarding concussions).
Injury prevention and education are important to keep athletes playing safely and effectively. Please encourage your child to report all injuries as soon as possible. Early intervention can lead to a quicker return to activity. If you have specific health and safety concerns or questions, please let me know.
Feel free to contact me at any time at the phone numbers listed below. Please check out some of the internet links on our site. Good luck for a healthy & successful season. Go SWAIN!!!!
